Does weed expire?
Flower does not spoil the way food does. It fades. Here is what actually changes in the bag, how fast, and the only time old weed is a real problem.
Is the window where sealed, well stored flower still tastes and feels close to day one. After that it is fine, just quieter.
Weed fades, it does not spoil
Dried cannabis flower has no hard expiration date. Kept sealed, cool and dark, it stays good for about six months to a year with only a small drop in strength and flavor. After that it keeps going, just weaker and harsher, for as long as you leave it. The one real exception is moisture: flower that gets damp can grow mold, and mold is the only thing that makes old weed unsafe rather than just disappointing.
Three things change over time. THC slowly converts into CBN, a milder compound people describe as sleepy rather than lifted. Terpenes, the aromatic oils that give a strain its smell and much of its feel, evaporate, and they go first. And the flower dries out, which makes it burn hot and taste like hay.
How long is weed good for?
In one widely cited lab study of flower stored at room temperature, THC dropped by roughly 16 percent after one year and about a quarter after two. Stored cold and dark it holds much longer; stored in a hot car it goes much faster. Rough milestones for a sealed bag at room temperature:
How to tell if weed is too old
Trust your senses in this order: smell, feel, look. Fresh flower is loud the second the bag opens. Old flower smells like hay, grass or nothing at all. Fresh flower is springy and slightly sticky; old flower crumbles to dust between your fingers and the stems snap like twigs. Looks change the least, though faded color and brown hairs are a hint.
Then the safety check. White or gray fuzz, a powdery film, dark soft spots, or a musty, damp basement smell mean mold, and that bag goes in the trash, not in a joint. Do not confuse mold with trichomes, the sparkly frost on good flower. Mold is dull; trichomes glitter.
| What you notice | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Smells like hay or nothing | Terpenes gone | Safe, just flat |
| Crumbles to dust | Dried out | Safe, harsh, use a bit more |
| Burns hot, sleepy feel | THC turned to CBN | Safe, expect a quieter session |
| White or gray fuzz, musty smell | Mold | Throw it out |
| Damp, bends instead of snaps | Too much moisture | Dry it out, check for mold |
Why the bag matters
Everything above happens faster with light, air, heat and moisture. Keep those four out and a bag of flower stays close to fresh for months. Opaque, sealed mylar (like the holographic Supers bag) blocks light and air until you open it. After that, press the air out and reseal, or move it to a glass jar in a dark cupboard. Never the fridge, never the freezer, never the car.
The full routine, including the right humidity range and what to do about a bag that has already dried out, is in our guide on how to store weed.
Keeping flower in the freezer to make it last, or in a clear jar on a sunny shelf because it looks nice.
Freezing makes trichomes brittle so they snap off, and sunlight is the fastest way to lose THC. A sealed bag in a dark drawer at room temperature beats both.
Buy the size you will finish
The easiest way to never smoke old weed is to match the bag to your pace. Supers flower comes in an eighth (3.5 g), a quarter (7 g) and an ounce (28 g) in the same color coded bag, so the strain you like is there in whichever size you will get through in a few weeks. Our weed sizes guide walks through which one fits.
Every bag has the batch THC and test results on the label, so you know what it started at. Supers is sold at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery. You can find a store.

7 grams in the green Hybrid bag, labeled Anytime / Vibe. Caramel and cream on the bag.

Quick answers
Does weed expire?
Not the way food does. Dried flower slowly loses THC, terpenes and moisture, so it gets weaker, flatter and harsher over time, but it only becomes unsafe if it grows mold.
How long is weed good for?
Sealed and stored cool and dark, flower stays close to fresh for about six months to a year. After one to two years it is noticeably weaker and harsher but still safe if it stayed dry.
What happens to THC as weed gets old?
THC slowly converts into CBN, which people describe as sleepier and less lifted. One study measured roughly a 16 percent THC drop after a year at room temperature.
How can you tell if weed is too old?
It smells like hay or nothing, crumbles to dust, and burns hot. Those are harmless. White or gray fuzz, dark soft spots or a musty smell mean mold, and that flower should be thrown out.
Can you smoke two year old weed?
If it stayed dry and shows no mold, yes. Expect less flavor and a weaker, sleepier effect. If it ever got damp or smells musty, do not.
