Top shelf vs smalls

Bud size is not quality. Here is what smalls and popcorn buds actually are, what the words "top shelf" should mean, and a simple rule for when to spend.

1 plant

Grows both. The big colas at the top become top shelf; the small buds lower down become smalls and popcorn.

The basics

Smalls and popcorn come from the same plant

A cannabis plant does not grow uniform buds. The top cola gets the most light and grows big and dense. Buds lower down and deeper inside the canopy get less light and stay small. After harvest, growers sort by size. The big buds go into the jars on the top shelf. The little ones get sold as smalls (usually fingertip sized, still proper buds) or popcorn (smaller and airier, about the size of popped corn).

Same plant, same genetics, same grow, same test. The difference is size and looks. That is why smalls are cheaper, and why they are often the smartest bag in the shop.

What top shelf actually means

"Top shelf" is a shelf, not a standard. At a good shop it means four things, and none of them is bud size.

GeneticsA strain worth growing, from a known cut
CureDried slow, cured weeks, not rushed
TrichomesFrost you can see, sticky to the touch
Test resultsBatch THC and a terpene panel on the label

A dense, beautiful nug that was dried fast and sat in a hot warehouse is not top shelf. A bag of smalls from a great cut, cured properly and loud when you open it, is the same flower as the jar next to it. The eye test is the least reliable test; the nose test and the label are the ones that count. Our guide to zaza goes deeper on telling real quality from a sticker.

Side by side

Top shelf vs smalls, honestly

Where they really differ: looks, burn and price. Big buds look better in a jar and grind into a fluffier, more even burn. Smalls can be a touch leafier (more small sugar leaves relative to bud) and may have lost a few trichomes to handling. Popcorn is airier and burns faster. On flavor and feel, from the same batch, most people cannot tell them apart once ground.

When to pay

When to pay up, and when not to

  1. 1Pay up for a new strain you want to judge

Big buds show you the structure, color and frost the grower intended. If you are learning what a strain is supposed to look like, buy the jar once.

  2. 2Pay up for a gift or a night out

Looks matter when you are showing it off. A fat, frosty nug is the point.

  3. 3Save when you grind it anyway

Joints, bowls, vaporizers, prerolls you roll yourself: the bud is getting ground to the same powder. Smalls win.

  4. 4Save when you buy in bulk

Bigger bags are already cheaper per gram. Bigger bags of flower you will grind are the cheapest flower you can buy.

  5. 5Never pay for a label without a test

Top shelf with no batch THC, no terpene panel and no lab name is just a sign. Walk past it.

Judging a bag by how big the nugs are, and assuming small buds mean weak weed.

Try this

Judge by the nose, the frost and the batch test. Size tells you where on the plant it grew, not how good it is.

Supers takes the value idea one step further. Instead of a separate smalls line, the same strain comes in three sizes: the eighth (3.5 g) to try it, the quarter (7 g) for the week and the ounce (28 g) for the best price per gram. Red bag for Sativa, green for Hybrid, blue for Indica, in every size, with batch THC and test results on the label. The sizes guide has the full breakdown.

It is California grown, lab tested flower priced for a Tuesday, not a special occasion. Supers is sold at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery. You can find a store.

Good questions

Quick answers

What are smalls in weed?

Smalls are the smaller buds from lower on the plant, sorted out after harvest and sold cheaper than the big top buds. Same genetics, same grow, same batch test, smaller size.

What are popcorn buds?

The smallest, airiest buds from deep inside the plant, about the size of popped corn. They burn a little faster and look less impressive but come from the same plant as the big nugs.

What does top shelf weed mean?

It should mean good genetics, a slow proper cure, visible trichome frost and a batch lab test with a terpene panel. It is a shelf label, not a standard, so check those four rather than trusting the sign.

Are smalls lower quality than regular buds?

Not in genetics, potency or test results, which come from the same batch. They may be slightly leafier and lose a few trichomes to handling. Once ground, most people cannot tell the difference.

Does Supers sell smalls?

Supers sells the same strain in an eighth, a quarter and an ounce rather than a separate smalls line. The ounce is the best price per gram in the lineup. Sold at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery.
