Best strains for sleep
Not medical advice, just what budtenders hear every night: which type, which strains, which terpenes, and the timing that keeps a wind-down from turning into a 2 am snack run.
Is what most people reach for at night. On the Supers bag, that is the blue one, labeled Nighttime / Chill.
Indica or sativa for sleep?
Cannabis is not an approved sleep treatment and we are a flower brand, not doctors. What follows is what people commonly report so you can make a careful choice if you decide to try it. If you take other medications or have a sleep condition, talk to your doctor first.
The short version: at night, most people reach for indica or indica-leaning hybrids. Sativas are the ones most often described as racy, talkative and wide awake, which is the opposite of the goal. The label is a rough guide, though. The terpenes and the dose matter more than the word on the bag, and a small amount of almost anything beats a big amount of the "right" strain.
Strains people commonly reach for at night
These names come up most when people talk about winding down. "Commonly reported" is what people say, not a promise; everyone reacts differently.
| Strain | Type | Nose | Commonly reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granddaddy Purple | Indica | Grape, berry | Heavy, sleepy, calm |
| Northern Lights | Indica | Sweet, earthy, pine | Settled, drowsy |
| Bubba Kush | Indica | Coffee, chocolate, earth | Body heavy, quiet |
| Wedding Cake | Indica-leaning | Vanilla, cake | Relaxed, calm |
| OZ Kush | Indica-leaning | Candy, citrus, gas | Relaxed, euphoric, happy |
| Original Glue (GG4) | Hybrid | Diesel, pine | Heavy body, couch |
Myrcene, linalool and the sleepy smell
If you only remember two words from this page, make them myrcene and linalool. Myrcene smells earthy and a little like mango or hops, and it is the terpene most often linked, in what people report, to the heavy, couch feeling. Linalool is the lavender smell, and lavender shows up in half the sleep products on earth for a reason. Caryophyllene, the peppery one, is the third name that comes up.
On a label, look for a terpene panel with myrcene at or near the top. Our guide to what terpenes are explains how to read one. Older flower also drifts sleepier as THC converts to CBN; more on that in does weed expire.
When to light up, and how much
Smoked flower starts in minutes, peaks around 30 to 60 minutes and fades over two to three hours. People who use it at night usually light up 60 to 90 minutes before bed so the peak is behind them when the lights go off, and they keep it to one or two small puffs. A big session right at bedtime is what produces the racing mind, the snacks and the groggy morning.
Edibles are a different animal: 30 minutes to two hours to start, four to eight hours of effect, and a form of THC the liver makes that many people describe as heavier and sleepier. That can be good for staying asleep and bad for the morning after. If you try one, start at 2.5 milligrams, take it early, and never take a second because "nothing happened" yet.
Smoking a lot right at bedtime, or taking a full 10 milligram gummy as you get into bed.
One or two small puffs an hour or more before bed, or a 2.5 milligram piece of an edible taken early with nowhere to be in the morning.
The blue bag
Supers puts its nighttime strains in the blue Indica bag, labeled Nighttime / Chill: OZ Kush (OG Kush line crossed with Zkittlez, with limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene the terpenes most often reported) and Wedding Cake Pop (vanilla and cake). Both come in eighths, quarters and ounces.
The purple Sugar Shake bags, Mimosa Fizz and Watermelon Smoothie, are the infused indicas. They test far higher than regular flower and are for experienced adults only, so they are the wrong place to start. Supers is sold at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery. You can find a store.
