What is a hybrid strain?
Hybrid is the most common word on a dispensary menu and the least explained. Here is what it means, why almost every strain is one, and how to use the label without over trusting it.
Is the Supers hybrid bag, labeled Anytime / Vibe. Red is Sativa, blue is Indica.
Hybrid means a cross
Cannabis has two traditional types. Sativa plants are tall and leggy and were long described as energizing. Indica plants are short and bushy and were described as relaxing. A hybrid is a cross of the two lines. Breeders cross strains to combine a flavor from one parent with a structure or effect from another, and they have been doing it for fifty years.
That is why nearly every strain you can buy today is a hybrid. Blue Dream, GG4, Wedding Cake, Gelato, Runtz, OG Kush: all crosses. A true, unmixed landrace sativa or indica is rare on a legal menu. When a bag says "sativa" or "indica" now, it almost always means a hybrid that leans that way.
Indica dominant and sativa dominant
Menus sort hybrids by which side they lean toward. A sativa dominant hybrid is sold as daytime: people describe it as lighter and more active. An indica dominant hybrid is sold as nighttime: heavier, calmer, more body. A balanced hybrid is the anytime pick. The ratio you sometimes see (70/30, 60/40) is the breeder's estimate of the genetics, not a measurement.
| Strain | Leans | Nose | Commonly reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Dream | Sativa | Blueberry, sweet | Easy, lifted, balanced |
| Gelato | Balanced to indica | Sweet cream, berry | Euphoric, mellow |
| Runtz | Balanced | Candy, tropical | Happy, relaxed |
| Original Glue (GG4) | Balanced, heavy | Diesel, pine, earth | Euphoric, heavy body |
| Wedding Cake | Indica | Vanilla, cake | Relaxed, calm |
| OZ Kush | Indica | Candy, citrus, gas | Relaxed, happy |
Why the label is a rough guide
Here is the honest part. Indica and sativa describe how a plant grows, and the link between plant shape and how the flower feels is loose. Two "indica" bags can feel very different, and plenty of people find a so called sativa sleepy. What people report lines up better with the terpenes (the smell) and the dose than with the word on the front.
So use the label the way Supers uses its vibe labels: as a starting point, a mood guide based on the type rather than lab data. Then let the smell and the terpene panel refine it. Our guide to what terpenes are shows how.
Treating "indica" as a guarantee of sleep and "sativa" as a guarantee of energy, then being surprised.
Read the type as a lean, read the terpenes as the character, and keep the first dose small. The three together are reliable; the word alone is not.
What the Supers bag colors mean
Supers turns the three types into three colors so you can find your vibe from across the counter. Red is Sativa, labeled Daytime / Active. Green is Hybrid, labeled Anytime / Vibe. Blue is Indica, labeled Nighttime / Chill. The same colors run through every size, from the eighth to the ounce.
The infused Sugar Shake line uses its own three: orange for Infused Sativa, lime for Infused Hybrid and purple for Infused Indica. Those are for experienced adults; read what infused flower is before picking one up.
Choosing between the three
- 1Daytime? Red
Sativa leaning hybrids like Strawberry Cough and Daydream. Lighter, more active in what people report.
- 2Not sure? Green
Balanced hybrids like Original Glue and Dulce De Leche. The anytime bag, and the safest first pick.
- 3Winding down? Blue
Indica leaning hybrids like OZ Kush and Wedding Cake Pop. Heavier, calmer, for the end of the day.
- 4Then smell it
Within a color, the nose decides. Gas, candy, dessert or citrus. Pick what sounds good tonight.

What is the difference between indica, sativa and hybrid?

What does indica dominant hybrid mean?
A hybrid whose genetics lean toward the indica side. Menus sell these as nighttime strains and people usually describe them as heavier and calmer. Wedding Cake and OZ Kush are examples.
