What is zaza?

Zaza is a vibe, not a strain. Here is what people actually mean by it, how the word got here, and the three checks that tell you whether a bag earns the name.

Za

Short for exotic. Say it about a bag and you are claiming it is top shelf: rare genetics, loud smell, frosty buds.

The word

Where zaza comes from

Zaza (also za or exotics) is street slang for exotic weed: the frostiest, loudest, best looking flower in the shop. The word came out of Atlanta rap around 2019 and 2020 and spread the way slang does now, through songs, memes and dispensary menus. It is a doubled up shortening of the first syllable of "exotic". There is no strain called Zaza; it is a tier.

What makes flower "exotic" has shifted over the years. In the 2010s it meant imported or hard to find genetics. Today it mostly means new designer crosses with dessert and candy names, grown indoors with heavy trichome coverage and a terpene profile you can smell through the bag.

The tiers

Exotic, top shelf, mid, and the rest

Dispensaries sort flower into shelves, and "exotic" sits at the top. The names vary from shop to shop, but the idea is the same everywhere: how rare the genetics are, how carefully it was grown and cured, and how it looks and smells. THC percent is part of the story, not the whole story; a 22 percent bag can be za and a 30 percent bag can be mids.

How to tell real exotic from a sticker

Anyone can print "exotic" on a jar. Flower cannot fake these three things. Run them in order and the sticker stops mattering.

  1. 1Look for frost

Trichomes are the tiny crystals on the bud. On real za you can see them without a loupe, and the bud sparkles when you tilt it. Dull, leafy, or hairy with no frost is not exotic no matter the name.

  2. 2Open it and smell

Exotic flower is loud. Candy, gas, fruit, funk, something specific and strong the moment the bag opens. Faint or hay-like means old or poorly cured.

  3. 3Read the test results

Every legal California bag has batch THC and a lab test. Ask for the terpene panel. Total terpenes above about 2 percent is a good sign; a strain name with no numbers is not.

  4. 4Check the structure

Dense, slightly sticky, springs back when squeezed, stems snap. Airy, crumbly or damp is a pass.

  5. 5Then look at the price

If it passes all four, decide whether the extra is worth it to you. If it fails any of them, it is not za, whatever the shelf says.

Skip this

Picking the bag with the highest THC number and the wildest name and calling it exotic.

Try this

Frost, smell, structure, then the terpene panel. The number on the front is the least useful of the five.

Price reality

Is zaza worth the money?

Sometimes. True exotic flower costs more because it is grown in smaller indoor batches, trimmed by hand and sold fast while the terpenes are still loud. If you can smell and see the difference, and the occasion calls for it, pay up and enjoy it. If you are buying for a regular week, the honest math is that a well grown, lab tested value bag from the same families of genetics gets you most of the way there at a fraction of the price.

The trick is knowing what you are paying for. A lot of what sits on the exotic shelf is a Runtz, Gelato or Zkittlez cross with a new name. Our guide to the strains people are buying in 2026 breaks down those families, and what terpenes are explains why the smell test works.

Good questions

Quick answers

What does zaza mean?

Zaza, or za, is slang for exotic weed: top shelf flower with rare or new genetics, visible trichome frost and a loud terpene smell. It is a tier, not a strain.

Where did the word zaza come from?

It came out of Atlanta rap around 2019 and 2020 as a doubled up shortening of "exotic", then spread through songs, memes and dispensary menus.

What is exotic weed?

Flower from rare or newly bred genetics, usually indoor grown in small batches, with heavy trichome coverage and strong, specific terpenes. Today most of it is a Runtz, Gelato or Zkittlez family cross.

How can you tell if weed is really exotic?

Look for frost you can see without a loupe, a loud and specific smell when the bag opens, dense sticky structure, and a lab test with a terpene panel. A name and a high THC number alone do not make it exotic.

Does Supers sell zaza?

Supers is value flower, not the exotic shelf: lab tested California flower from well known families like GG4, OZ Kush and Wedding Cake, sold in color coded eighths, quarters and ounces at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery.
