Weed for beginners
A first dispensary trip is easier than a first trip to a wine shop. Here is what to bring, what to say, what to buy and the one rule that makes the first night go well.
With a government ID, or 18+ with a medical recommendation. That is the whole entry requirement in California.
What to bring and what to expect
Bring a valid government ID. You must be 21 or older, or 18 with a medical recommendation, and the front desk checks everyone, every time. Bring cash or a debit card. Most California dispensaries take cash and many take debit through a PIN terminal; credit cards usually do not work. Most shops have an ATM.
Inside, a budtender walks you through the menu. Phones are fine for looking at the menu, but ask before taking photos. Nobody expects you to know anything, and "it is my first time" is the most useful sentence you can say.
What to ask a budtender
Budtenders answer the same questions all day and the good ones love a beginner. Lead with when and how you want to use it, not with a strain name you read online.
- 1Say it is your first time
They will slow down, skip the jargon and steer you to the gentle end of the menu.
- 2Say when you will use it
Daytime, a hangout, or winding down at night. That picks the type (sativa, hybrid or indica) for you.
- 3Ask for something mild
Flower in the high teens to low twenties for THC is plenty. You do not need the strongest thing in the case.
- 4Ask what it smells like
Sweet, citrus, earthy, gassy. Pick what sounds good. The smell is the best clue to the feel.
- 5Ask for the batch test
Batch THC and the lab name are on every legal bag. A budtender can show you the certificate.
- 6Buy small
An eighth of flower, a single preroll, or a low dose edible. Never the ounce on day one.
Flower, preroll or edible for a first time?
Flower is the most flexible: you control the amount puff by puff, it starts in minutes, and it fades in two to three hours. You need a grinder and papers or a pipe. A preroll is flower already rolled; light it, take one or two puffs, put it out, save the rest. Easiest first purchase. An edible is the hardest to pace: 30 minutes to two hours to start, four to eight hours of effect, and the classic beginner mistake is taking more at the 45 minute mark because nothing happened yet.
The standard first bag is an eighth, 3.5 grams, which is roughly five to seven joints. Our sizes guide explains the rest of the menu math.
| Format | Starts | Lasts | Good first pick? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flower (eighth) | Minutes | 2 to 3 hours | Yes, if you have a pipe or papers |
| Preroll | Minutes | 2 to 3 hours | Yes, the easiest |
| Edible | 30 min to 2 hours | 4 to 8 hours | Only at 2.5 mg with a free evening |
| Infused flower | Minutes | 3+ hours | No, that is for experienced adults |
Strains to start with, and what to skip
For a first time, people most often do well with balanced hybrids and mellow classics in the high teens to low twenties for THC: Blue Dream, Wedding Cake, Northern Lights, Harlequin if you want very little high at all. Skip the racy, high THC sativas and anything infused, which is flower with concentrate added and tests far higher than regular flower.
Then pace it. One or two puffs, wait 15 minutes, decide. Sit down, have water and a snack nearby, and do not drive. If you overdo it, nothing dangerous happens, but it is unpleasant: find a quiet spot, drink water, and it passes in an hour or two.
Buying the strongest thing on the menu because stronger must be better, then finishing the whole preroll.
Something mild, two puffs, fifteen minutes. You can always have more. You cannot have less.
A beginner friendly bag
Supers was built to be easy to shop. Every bag is color coded: red for Sativa (Daytime / Active), green for Hybrid (Anytime / Vibe), blue for Indica (Nighttime / Chill), so you can say "the green bag" and be done. The eighth is the starter size, and the flower strains test in the low twenties on the Wellgreens menu, which is a sensible range to begin with. Original Glue and Dulce De Leche are the green bag hybrids.
Skip the orange, lime and purple Sugar Shake bags for now; they are infused and made for experienced adults. Supers is sold at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery. You can find a store.

3.5 grams in the green Hybrid bag, Anytime / Vibe. A sensible first bag.
Two puffs, fifteen minutes.
Supers is sold at Wellgreens, Jungle Boys San Diego and MedLeaf Delivery. Batch THC and test results are on every label. For adults 21 and older.
